17th January - Report
|
At the start of the MGCC annual Twilight Run on Sunday 17th January it was hot…….VERY HOT! However, there was a good roll-up of members who braved the 43+ degrees heat to drive their MGs along an interesting and scenic route to arrive at Beaton Park, Nedlands for a picnic. The organizers of the run, Val and John Goff, had secured a lovely shady spot under the trees beside the river, where everyone could set-up their chairs and tables etc. The setting became even more pleasant as the sun disappeared below the horizon, the temperature dropped and the lights along the shoreline sparkled on the water. Having enjoyed their
refreshments everyone settled in to the usual playful banter and
socializing before finally heading home for some “lid off” wind in the
hair motoring under the stars. All in all, a very happy and enjoyable
evening – thanks Val and John, for all your efforts in organizing the
run. Ed. |

CAMS Festival of Motor Sport - Report
|
The inaugural running of this event was embraced by a very broad selection of motor sport enthusiasts, with a total of 28 exibitors, both active and static. The highlight to me was the driving skills and performance by Australian Autokhana Champion, Scott Bennett in a demonstration autokhana, put on by the Mini Car Club. It is very easy to talk about "making a car talk" but here it was in reality - handbrake turns which were consistenly centremetre perfect! And at speed... On the second part of the course, there was a lot more slipping and sliding going on - to suit the layout and muchburning of rubber! For veriety, other exhibitions included sprints down the side of the drag strip and looping back again, autocross events for specially perpared off road vehicles, acceleration demonstrations and more |

20th February - Report
|
February 20th, 2010 dawned cool and overcast, a welcome respite from the very high temperatures of the previous week. The sun did shine intermittently later in the day but a refreshing breeze provided ideal conditinos for the annual Concours d'Elegance held at the Bayswater Riverside Gardens, A.P. Hinds Park. More than seventy MG's covering a wide range of models were displayed, attracting plenty of attention from the public as well as MG enthusiasts. Doug Bush, the Chairman of the UK MGCC South East England Centre, was on holiday in Perth recently and volunteered as a judge at MGCCWA Concours d'Elegance held at Bayswater on Saturday 20th February. His expertise was much appreciated. |

Northam "Round the Houses" Social Run, 28th March - Report
|
The VSCC Northam Flying Fifty, Mt Ommaney Hill Climb & Bernard Park Autokhana were held on the weekend of the 27th & 28th of March, with several members of the MGCCWA both competing & spectating at the event. The event was celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Touring Car Championships and whilst numbers were down on previous years, the reports from those that attended were extremely positive. Saturday morning was warm & humid as competitors prepared for the Hillclimb at the spectacular Mt Ommaney. The groups were split into two with several members of the MG club competing in this event. Whilst the MG’s & Midgets gave it their best, the sheer engine capacity of the Datsun’s, Fords and even a BMW M7 ensured victory on this long straight climb. Some of the vehicles were in top gear at the onset of the first hairpin! No off’s were reported and Tony Brett managed to avoid any boulders…… The next event, being held in town was the Bernard Park Autokhana, organized and commentated by our own Ron Fabry. More than 20 cars competed in what seemed to the naked eye as a fairly simple course. This was not the case when viewed from behind the wheel! Proceedings were kicked off when Kevin Ball displayed the art of tyre smoking coming to an abrupt halt in the stop garage and James Hopper hadn’t loaded the course into his GPS, with a wrong way on his first lap. The tricky course had a hairpin turn at the half way point which proved challenging for the B’s and anyone else with a non syncro first gear. There were some very impressive times with the Midgets, Sprites and MG’s finishing above some of the high horsepower competitors on the leader board. The big day on Sunday arrived, with 17 MG’s, (11 were members of the MGCC) Sprites & Midgets competing in the Flying Fifty and another 15 having made the voyage up for the static car display. Great to see Dennis Fair making the trip taking time off from driving his Volvo prime mover exchanging it for his V8 MGB-GT, even it did spring an oil leak; a symptom of under-use. Thanks to Kerryn & Kevin stokes for towing the trailer up as part of the display. The weather was perfect and the event started with the Touring Cars practice lap, and within seconds of the safety car leaving the circuit there had been an accident. This served to make a very nervous first time competitor - James Hopper, waiting at the start grid very much more nervous still….. The MG’s set off as the second group in the practice grid soon settling in to a comfortable routine. Four competition regularity events followed displaying some outstanding driving. A special mention to Tom Van Den Hoek for achieving both a first & second, an excellent effort in his near bog standard 1500cc Midget. There were a smattering of first time drivers amongst the class, allegedly preventing our own club President Richard Gusterson from passing and achieving his desired result. Well that is his story & I am told he is sticking to it! All in all the event was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended, but not without incident. Ron Fabry who, had this have been a concourse event would have walked away with first prize, missed the fourth round due to an absence of oil pressure in his Midget & David Hansen blew a hose on his MGB-GT V8. The next event in this VSCC series is to be held at Albany on the 5th – 7th of June. These events are well coordinated and allow all types of vehicles and drivers to compete providing they hold a CAMS LS2 license. Please support these events & the VSCC as those club members help to support our own club events. |

National Meeting Adelaide - Report
|
You will find in more detail elsewhere on this run. For Marion and I our first, a magnificent trip, the itinerary organized by Peter Harper first class, thank you Peter. Down the Great Ocean Road, hood down what could be better, topped off with a helicopter ride at the 12,10,9 apostles? Venue in Glenelg brilliant, impressive organization – just a few little hiccups for us, but we all had fun. Then the drive back – Horrocks Pass I am going to do that again and again and yet again. We did not find the Nullabor boring, we were doing what we got the MG for – touring, and for all those that have MG cars and don’t use them, you are missing out. We would be happy to turn around and do it all over again, if your car has minor problems, anything can be fixed but of course if you had a modern TF (the only car not to break down) all would be fine. It is a shame and disappointing the 3MG clubs from WA could not form one team. As one team we believe we had the potential to win the Wratten Trophy this year. Let’s hope for future years commonsense will prevail and the State can in all respects be represented by one combined team, However a magnificent trip with good company in a good car. David and Marion Blaxall Many outstanding individual results were achieved in their respective classes, as follows: Concours – 1st places, Col Cleaver and Ron Kilcullen. 3rd place, Jim Ridgewell. Motorkhana – 1st places, Jason Goff and Tim Harland. 2nd places, Tony Ford and Jorne Rasmussen. Sprint – 2nd places Tony Ford and Jason Goff. 3rd place, Jorne Rasmussen. Octagon Magazine – a highly commended 2nd place. Congratulations, Editor David Pitcher and all contributors to our magazine. A more detailed report will be published by our team, once they have returned to Perth. We are very proud of your achievements |

So up early and in the the MG, follow the Toodyay road up the valley. Stop at Toodyay, full up with fuel and a quick bakery visit, and then out to Dowerin to be welcomed by a big "Event" sign. Scrutineering was conducted in the huge under cover Ram shed, with the Dowerin CC setting up the sausage sizzle in he corner and the locals checking out the cars. We were in for a good day. There were two courses for the day, first being set up around the field day display area. A practice run gave a feel for the Clay/Sand/Bauxite surfaced course which was smooth and slippery and about to become very dusty. Not a problem for a well balanced Midget, I thought. The only caution needed being the white posts that marked some of the corners. My first timed run on the course allowed me to experience an "all points of the compass" cornering manoeuver, much to the spectators approval. The second course was half bitumen and half gravel; leaving the bitumen into a gravel dog leg certainly gets the heart rate up. It's amazing how far an MG will slide sideways and still recover. A dirt Superkhana is huge fun. If you don't mind stretching the throttle cable, fancy a bit of opposite lock and aren't entered in a concourse event in the near future then give the next one a go. Thanks to Dowerin CC and AEM for organizing it, I will be back. |

We had a great turnout of cars for the MGCC of WA Midvale Superkhana on Sunday morning 11th April. 34 cars entered on the morning and by all accounts every one enjoyed themselves. It was a lovely morning, the sun was out and Paul had set out a new course to make life interesting. A couple of early starters where over eager and had off's. Nothing too serious—more dented ego's than anything else. There was only one car that did not finish on the morning due to a breakdown. Of the 15 MGCC of WA who entered Dave Eustace was the fastest and if he did not have an early off I'm sure he would have won the day. (use your first run as a sighting run !!) I would like to thank the members from the following clubs, The Triumph Sports Owners Association, The Alfa Romeo Owners Club, The Lotus Club, and a couple of members of The Austin Healey Club. With out these people supporting our events we would not be able to run these types of events (thank you one and all) One last thank you is to Paul Blank and his helpers at A.E.M. These people do make it easier to run this type of event. DON'T FORGET The Next Competition MG Car Club event is the Exciting Motorplex day on November 7th 2010 MARK IT IN YOUR DIARY NOW !! Treasure Hunt Cruise to West Coast Motor Museum and Picnic - Report
|
Weather was perfect for a drive to the Hills, on to the Coast, finishing at the Motor Museum at Stakehill, Mandurah. Syd and Deanna did a wonderful job of organization; including route, questions and some tricky ‘treasures’ to collect. The museum was very different with several examples of speedway cars from the 60/70s of Forrestfield and Claremont Speedway era. Most of the other cars displayed were in original condition – many with excellent paintwork although fifty to sixty years old. Owner, Ron West gave us a splendid guided tour |

Memoirs of a Motoring Writer - Report
|
Following the business commitments of the meeting, our guest speaker was introduced who proceeded to inform members of his enviable duties of a world travelled motoring writer. Members were invited to furnish questions and despite ranging from "tricky to sensitive", Neil answered all with authority We thank Neil for his attendance, his contributions and support of the MG Car Club of Western Australia and look forward to a continued association. Concluding with a delectable supper of hot roast beef and gravy rolls, assortment of cakes and coffee, all agreed the night was a huge success. Thank you for coming and Safe Motoring Reg McKinley Club Captain |

Winter Woolies Run, Sunday 27 June
|
Rug up in your winter woollies and join us at the Clubhouse at 9.00am for a 9.30am departure. If it is likely to rain, all will be forgiven for traveling with hoods and windows closed! Please pack a flask and some morning tea for a stop in the Hills. Lunch will be at a country pub with hearty winter meals starting at $17.00 - $30.00 approx. We do need RSVPs for this event in order to secure a nice inside location for lunch. Please email your RSVP to accounts@telf.biz or let Rachel or Mark Telford know at the next meeting or on phone 0439 522 011. RSVPs required by Friday 18 June.
