Dennis Fair suggested a twilight run for our first outing for 2008 and what a great idea it was. Unfortunately for Dennis, a heavy work load did not allow him time to organise the run so he asked if I could do it for him. With help from my wife Sue we started to plan and finalise the run two weeks prior to the run date.

Thirty-six cars left the clubrooms at 7pm on a hot Saturday evening and headed down Guildford road, through the Graham Farmer tunnel and up the freeway to Hepburn Avenue. When we reached Sorrento we turned left (my apologies for omitting this turn from the instructions) and followed the coast all the way down to Fremantle.

What a great drive ,with lots of people looking at, and waving to the impressive looking convoy of MG’s.

From Fremantle we then followed the river all the way to Applecross, with plenty of beautiful homes, yacht clubs and views across the river to the city skyline. It was a most enjoyable drive, with feedback from participants being very positive.

We then continued on to Deep Water Point in Mount Pleasant where we had all the MG’s parked together in the car park. What a great site that was - everyone gathered together on the grass area with tables and chairs sharing food and drinks, with lots of social chit-chat. As the sun went down the relaxed group enjoyed the pleasant surrounds and good company. Many people stayed past 10pm and all agreed the drive was a success.

What better way to spend a fine summer’s day than at the Swan River’s edge at Bayswater for the MG Car Club Annual Concours.

Many beautiful cars were on display from our club, the MG Owners Club and a few privateers.    The general consensus was that the standard of presentation gets better every year.

A number of members “came out of the woodwork” to take in the ambience of the day, including Pat and Angela Reid (with their MGA Twin Cam), John and Judy Haggerty, Ken McKimmie, Alan Richardson and Elliot Montagu, to name just a few.

Ron and Jan Killcullen’s  1936 SA Tickford Coupe  restored to its original two-tone blue style was unveiled and caused a great deal of interest.  It had been driven at the MGCC rally at Beechworth, Victoria, but this was its first official  outing in WA.

Grey Beard's Run,

27th February

The first “Grey Beards Run” was held on Wednesday 27th February 2008.

The weather was hot (to say the least) but eleven hardy “senior” members braved the elements to  participate in a thoroughly enjoyable drive through some lovely countryside before ending up at Noble Falls near Gidgeganup for a picnic lunch under a shady pergola.

Many thanks to Ray Oakes for organizing this very entertaining little excursion.

The annual “Classic Car Show” was held for the thirty ninth time on Sunday 16 March 2008 at Mussel Pool in Whiteman Park.

As usual, the MG Car Club of WA was represented by a good cross section of MGs and their owners. The best part of a dozen MGs lined up looking very smart and well presented.

We attracted our fair proportion of public interest with people either showing curiosity or recalling their memories of MGs in their lives.

Public support for the show was terrific, it being said attendance was another record of many thousands. This was made clear as retail outlets were running out of food and drink supplies.

The weather played some part in this as although not as hot as in previous years it was fine and pretty warm. However plenty of shady trees around to shelter beneath and engage in car chatter.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and even the departure ran smoothly without the big traffic hold ups of previous years.

Thank you to everyone who attended for your support.

Northam "Round the Houses" Social Run,

March 30th

The 10th annual Northam Round the Houses  Flying 50 Regularity event was held on Sunday 30th March.

MGCC members met at the clubrooms ready for an early morning start to enable the cars to be in place at Northam by 9.00am.

After some “yacking”, it was all go for a very pleasant run to Northam up the main highway. After a couple of ‘hiccups’ getting into Northam everyone made their way to the grassed area designated for the MGCC car display.

Everything was set up (thanks to those that helped) and then it was either relaxing or looking at the great line up of cars entering for the days ‘Round the Houses’ events.

The Barbeque was made good use of, then, at 1300hrs a call was put out to take part in a ‘Treasure Hunt’. It was hilarious to see so many people racing around here and there trying to collect wrapped lollies! We had 3 winners and 3 ‘happy faces’.

I think that the number of MG cars taking part was down on last years figures. Unfortunately three cars broke down, so their owners arrived in the family car.

The temperature did increase after the cool early morning start, but with the shade provided by the awnings  and trees everyone seemed to enjoy the day and interaction.

Thank you to all those that helped pack up (although made a bit harder by one reprobate). Ooops! better be careful here as he handles the club’s money!

Greybeard's Social Run to Parkerville,

April

Eight cars left the Clubrooms at 11 am for a busy run through Midland and over Greenmount.

The traffic cleared and we enjoyed a good run to the Parkerville Tavern, via Mundaring on to the Toodyay Road to Parkerville.

The Tavern put on a first rate meal at a very fair price and we enjoyed our food on the veranda.

The leisurely outward trip was made in 1 hour, leaving a 30 minute return trip back to Perth.

We enjoyed good conversation; sorting out most of the world problems; and look forward to seeing you on the next Greybeard’s Run.

Moondyne Run,

4th May

We had a perfect day for a picnic and country trip to Toodyay at the Moondyne  Festival. A local trader provided the green lawn which backed on to the river for our picnic and somewhere to leave our belongings. The Town provided lots of stalls and entertainment and the re-enactment of the capture of Moondyne Joe took place in the main street with plenty of shots being fired (blanks of course).

Despite warnings of rain by the weather forecasters earlier in the week, Sunday 4th May dawned bright and sunny. Seven MG’s and their drivers and passengers arrived at the Clubrooms ready for an 8.00am start for the annual run to Toodyay for the colourful and entertaining “Moondyne Festival”.

As some drivers did not have navigators everyone watched out for the car behind so nobody would get lost - and so it was, with everyone arriving together after a very pleasant drive through the countryside.

Another seven MG’s joined them at Toodyay, having made their way independently, forming up into an impressive display along Stirling Terrace, the main street.

There was plenty to do and see during the festival including many sideshows and stalls selling a wide variety of goods and food plus an antiques display. A local craft shop kindly gave permission for club members to picnic on the grass beside the river behind the shop – something everyone enjoyed.

During the day many visitors to the event stopped to admire the MG’s and chat to their owners.

Thanks to David and Marion Blaxhall for organizing a really good day.

British Car Day,

The British car day at Gingin was another spectacular day.

Congratulations to the Shire of Gingin – the venue is always immaculate with green lawns, babbling streams and walkways through the paddocks.

We counted 79 MGs mostly from our Club but with a contribution from the other MG Clubs. Lots of  very interesting cars and displays to look at. Regalia sales were also very good with over $400 cash plus orders, taken on the day.

Thanks to Peter Robinson and Owen Daley for handling the parking;  and to Kevin Ball and Dennis Fair who organized the regalia for the day.

Winter Woolies,

22nd June

report by Richard Gusterson

This run is, of course, historically founded on "roof down" in torrents of rain, ice, sleet or snow! We "enjoyed" none of these, the day being a little nippy to begin with but followed only by warmth and sunshine.

16 MG's departed the clubrooms, driving up through the northern suburbs to have a coffee break at the Maze in Bullsbrook, followed by lunch at Amirage restaurant in Gingin West. June Reith "mein hostess" fed us exceptionally well after the friendliest of greetings - "small serve" did not exist in her vocabulary and after 3 courses there was not a hungry person amongst us. this included the Mckinlays, who we were pleased had caught up with us (and in their MG) after an earlier "no go". well done Reg and Betty - this now made 17 MGs. between courses we enjoyed strolling around the grounds and met the friendliest of alpacas.

congratulations to Karon and Erik Sorensen for organising a really top day which included again driving on roads some of us didn't know existed. It was a great drive, great weather and a top venue for the luncheon. What more could you ask for?

Safety Fast Run,

25th / 26th October

Dennis Fair

With the Safety Fast Run behind us for another year and plans underway for the 2009 event, I want to take the opportunity to pass on some well deserved thanks and give you a bit of the behind the scenes feedback.

The Committee worked tirelessly to make this event happen and combined with the participation of you, the entrant, a good time was had by most. For this I thank you all.

Anyone who has ever organised, or assisted in running an event for a large group of people will know that not all goes to plan, and our event was no exception. For my part, finding the roads and planning the route was made easy with the assistance of Kevin Ball, who was not on the Committee but was more than happy to assist.

To this end our job was made even easier by the assistance of Bruce and Leonie Marshall of Wanjedda Hilltop B&B, they gave advice on local roads and sponsored our accommodation whilst we were in the area -for this I thank you both very much.

The distance of the run? Some say “too far”, some “just right” and some say “longer” – No doubt we will get more feedback as we proceed to plan the 2009 event as we are all aware the roads and most venues within 100kms of Perth have been flogged to death and it is very hard not to repeat certain routes. I also realise that both the cars and owners are all getting older and it is much easier to look at them in a static display than pound the pavement for a few hundred kilometres.

Erik and Karon Sorensen took on a huge work-load, investing over $3000.00 of their own capital and around 100 man hours to make this all happen. Erik also designed, distributed and coordinated the 2008 SFR Poster, a task which turned pear shaped on a few occasions. He also organised the Start venue, the photographer (who cancelled at the last minute) and then between himself and Karon had all sorts of problems with the overnight venue and their ability to cater for the large number of entrants. The necessity to find an alternate venue, The Italian Club, buses to transport entrants from their respective motels and then to be told, with two weeks to go, that The Collie Ridge could handle the SFR function. The disappointing problem with the “red wine” and the inflexible attitude of the management coupled with the verbal abuse pointed towards Karon, tended to sour a great social evening. Karon is to be congratulated for her planning of the Lunch Venue, The Bush Band, the raffle and the Evening meal at the Collie Ridge.

Unfortunately I forgot, in my closing speech on Sunday, to thank both Karon and Erik for their tireless effort in organising parts of this event – for this I offer my sincere apologies.

To Ann Manning, thanks for organising the Regalia, the typing of the route sheets and organising the Sunday meal at Leonda.

To all other Committee Members, Sponsors & Entrants, I thank you in appreciation of your support of the 2008 Safety Fast Run and look forward to seeing you all at the 2009 event.
