SAFETY FAST RUN The Safety Fast Run originated in 1991 when members of the MG Car Club of W.A. determined there was a need for a touring event which would attract all owners of MGs, both those who were members of other clubs, and members of the general public. The intention was to bring all MG owners together for a weekend of informal fun, without stressing drivers or navigators. A committee was formed, and over the years, this has included members of the two other MG clubs in W.A., the MG Owners Club, and the TC Owners Club, thus ensuring the interests of other MG owners were catered for and that the organisational load was shared around. Chairmanship of the event was under the auspices of the MG Car Club of W.A. and responsibility for maintaining the financial accounts, and later, for obtaining the necessary CAMS approvals and insurance, was and is, undertaken by the MG Car Club of W.A. It was always intended that the event would be self-funding, and any “profits” would be held in trust for later events in case there was a shortfall in funding in any particular year. While some “surpluses” were generated occasionally and dividends paid out to the three clubs, over the years its share of these funds were put back into the event by the MG Car Club of W.A. The event has gone from strength to strength and in 2002, the tenth year of the event, over 100 vehicles took part. This number was repeated in following years, and the appeal of the event can be gauged by the fact that over 20 of the entrants in 2004 were “private” entries. It is the intention of the MG Car Club of W.A. that the event retains its fun element, despite the ever increasing demands for greater accountability from the insurance industry, and thus the Club’s insurers. This accountability resulted in the Club having to issue temporary Club membership for the event to ensure all participants were covered by the event insurance. Despite these requirements, costs have been kept to a minimum and any “profits” from the event remain in the Safety Fast Run account, held by the MG Car Club of W.A. The contribution of all MG club members in helping to organise the event is appreciated, and it is hoped that the event can continue for many years to come, and provide a fun weekend away for all MG owners and their spouses, partners, and friends, at an affordable price.
