Midvale Superkhana - February

Sunday 3rd of February saw the running of the first Superkhana for 2008 at the Midvale Speedome

It was 37 degrees c.  in the shade, but it didn't deter the two MG diehards Rami Brass and David Pitcher from competing. Rami again put in some very fast times with a fastest run of 50.29 seconds and was the 16th fastest in a field of 59 cars.

He was just quick enough to beat a Renault 8 Gordini and very hot Porsche 356 to come first in class. There is quite a bit of friendly rivalry between these drivers and it was good to see the MG come out on top.

David put in some consistent performances to register a best time of 60.38 seconds, beating some very fast machinery including a Toyota MR 2, Triumph TR4 and Austin Healy Sprite. Unfortunately, a slow gear change in the last run set him back; otherwise he would have improved even further up the rankings.

Seventy-eight entrants competed in this event, which was the first round of the Speed Event Series for 2008.

The speed events are divided into a number of car classes to accommodate a wide range of vehicles including open wheelers, sports racing cars, clubman’s, fast road cars, production sports cars and historic cars. There are 13 Speed events scheduled for the calendar year, at a variety of venues.

The format of this event was that each competitor would have a practice session of approx five laps and four competitive sessions each consisting of a warm up lap, three timed laps and a cool down lap. In each session there are no more than seven to eight cars on the track at any one time and racing is against the clock and not directly against the other vehicles on the track.

Three MGs competed at the meeting, each in a different class category. MGCC members competing were myself in my trusty 1963 MGB, (John Hurney, Chief Driving Instructor for the WASCC also drove my car at the event), and Brendan Hagarty in his very fast Nissan Turbo engined MGB. The third MG was an early model historic open wheeled special well driven by Tony Gilfous.

It turned out to be an extremely successful outing for all the MGs present. I managed to come first in Class 3B (followed by John Hurney in second place), Brendan came first in Class 4C, and Tony came first in Class 2. Overall this was a great event with lots of fun in a relatively safe environment.

The next round of the series is at Collie Motorplex on 2nd March 2008.

A beautiful warm day on the 2nd of March saw 10 MG drivers turn up at the
March Superkhana at the Speedome in Midvale .

There was some exceptional performances with David Eustace clocking the quickest time amongst the MG drivers in his Midget Special with a total time of
195.25 seconds , this put him amongst the quicker Subaru WRXs and Mitsubishi EVOs.

The second  quickest MG was Rami Brass in his MGB , clocking 200.99 seconds and consistently clocking his 4 runs in the low 50 seconds with a quickest time of 50.04  maybe next time he can crack the 50 second barrier .

Ross Humphries came in third with an overall time of 209.9 , closely followed by
Ron Fabry with a time of 209.99 . It was great to see Ross and Ron bring their cars  out on the day and  with very little practise manage to finish in the top half of the field, considering most of the field is made up of high performance Subarus, Skylines, Porsches and Toyotas which are producing more than twice the horsepower of these MGs .

Ivan Michelson again brought down his superbly presented MGC and managed a respectable overall time of 231.4 seconds. He was closely followed by  Erik Sorenson, at the event for the first time, with a time of 233.26 , Erik would have been much faster had he not hit a cone and lost 5 seconds on his second run.
Erik's car is seriously fast, sounds great and with a bit more time at these events will be seriously challenging the quicker MGs

David Pitcher, an old hand at this event now, clocked a time of 236.69  and comfortably cracked the 60 second barrier with a best time 58.5 seconds, a good result considering David is driving a stock standard MGB on road tyres.

Dennis Fair, Kevin Ball and Karon Sorenson, all first timers, started the day slowly but improved dramatically with Dennis clocking a fastest time of 55.71, and Kevin a fastest time of 56.94. With quicker times in their first runs this duo will be serious contenders in their Midget . Karon drove Erik's car and was the big improver of the day, she started the day with a 67 second first run and finished with a 57 second final run after some encouragement from Rami.
Not bad when you are driving someone else's car and competing  for the first time.

Best of all  no car was damaged and everyone had a great day .

The Classic Challenge is a two day event where cars compete over 27 stages involving autokhanas , sprints and  quarter mile drags. The only requirement is that you have two fire extinguishers, a first aid kit, helmet a roadworthy car and a co-driver - in my case Peter Harper a fellow member.

I knew I was up against it when I arrived at scrutineering on Friday night amongst the
15 or so WRXs and Misubishi EVOs there was some really nice and very fast cars; including a brand new Porsche Turbo, a Lancia Delta Intergale turbo, a very nice Mustang Shelby, a Lancia Stratos , BMWs M3s , an AC Cobra replica with 5.8 Litre motor and a couple of high powered Nissan Skylines and Drift cars with some 600 horsepower at the rear wheels. Some of these high powered cars used two sets of rear wheels over the weekend which made me believe they were not joking about horsepower numbers.

The stages  included events at Midvale Speedome , AHG, Kwinana Motoplex and various carparks around Mandurah and Perth.
Some of the teams had vans and support cars following them to each stage with spares and fuel. All I did was check the oil, tyre pressure and put my spare wheel in the boot - after all nothing goes wrong with MG’s - and luckily nothing did .

Peter and I where in trouble when we had a Wrong Way on the first event and then missed a garage at the AHG autokhanas. Saturday afternoon saw us arrive at the Drag strip and we managed 16.28 which I thought was pretty good till I noticed most of the newer cars were getting low 13’s and the  Porsche Turbo managed to get into  the 11 second territory.

We managed to catch up some time when Peter put in a brilliant performance in the night sprint in Mandurah.

We started the second day in about 40th place out of 45 cars determined to at least put on some decent performances and not make any more mistakes. Peter drove really well and managed to get into the top 15 a couple of times in the shorter autokanas and I managed some decent times at the Midvale Speedome, a track  I am reasonably familiar with .By the end of the second day we finished 30th out of 45 cars ahead of some pretty good WRX’s, the Cobra and Lancias, not bad for the oldest and least powerful car in the field.

At the end of the two days there was a lot of hard driving, some very entertaining and challenging courses and both the MG and its drivers made it home safely with big smiles and determination to lose weight and do better next year.

Sunday the 19th of October saw the club run its first Superkhana at the Speedome in Midvale. About 28 MGCC members turned up together with participants from the Triumph Sports Owners Club and a member of the Healy club.

It was a perfect day for competing with a lot of first timers taking the opportunity to really test driving skills and put their sports cars through their paces.

It was great to see members like Mike Siddaway and Richard Gusterson put in some excellent times in road going MGBs, showing us how competitive these cars are in standard form. It was also interesting to see the mix of cars which included an MGA, Midgets, two MGC,s, Dennis Fair in his beautifully turned out MGB V8 and MGBs in various states of tune.

The trophy winners in their categories included;
David Eustace - Outright
Ross Humphies - under 2000cc
Shawn Moore - under 1650cc
Rachel Telford - Fastest Lady
Sue Ball - Most improved .

The Club was also a winner pocketing a handsome profit from the event.
Thanks to Ron and Dawn Fabry for organising and officiating on the day, and thank you to Jessica for helping with time keeping.

For all the MG rev heads stay tuned for the next event .
