There were three MG's taking part; Darryl Hansen in his GTV8, John Barraclough and myself in MGB Roadsters. After the second run there looked to be a bit of a race on between John, myself and the Westfield of Colin Youd, however the Westfield encountered some significant mechanical problems which sidelined it for the rest of the afternoon. Due to a miscalculation of fuel levels on board by yours truly, my time suffered because of fuel starvation problems at the carousel. John, very generously lent me some fuel from his jerry can which made my third run more respectable, but fuel starvation raised it's ugly head again on the last run resulting in a fairly ordinary time.
At the end of the day John took home the trophy for the Road Class cars ahead of a 2006 Turbo charged Falcon Typhoon - a well deserved result! Darryl's times improved a good 9 seconds over the 4 runs.
I'd like to thank John for his generosity in giving me enough much needed fuel to enable me to complete the day and get safely to the nearest service station - thanks again John. I guess any other member of the club would have done the same and certainly if I'm ever in the position to return the favour to John or any other competitor or club member I would jump at the opportunity, but the act does epitomise the spirit of the MG Car Club and the motor sport community.
I'm looking forward to the next round of the Summer Hill Climb Series at Jack's Hill on 21 January and hopefully we'll get some more MG's taking part. |

It was a great day on the 1st, though some may have thought that there was some connection between the date (1st April) and the time (7.00 am) that 28 MG enthusiasts turned up at the clubrooms for their annual pilgrimage to Northam.
What was forecast to be a day with “occasional showers” turned out to be very pleasant. Anyway, after disclosing, name, number and rank we filed our way to Northam along the Great Eastern Highway, which at places resembled an Autobahn - well done the Main Roads Dept.
Our arrival in Northam was greeted by a smiling Eric and Karon who had organised an exclusive spot for the MG’s to line up in all their splendour - and wasn’t it a spectacle! For the period prior to the actual event, there were more spectators around the MG’s than the entire groups of “other cars”. It wasn’t long before Dennis set up shop and was doing brisk business, while Peter in his “mock MG” rocked up and erected the club marquee and MG signs to let spectators know that we didn’t just drive great cars, but were also well organised. Thanks guys…you did a great job.
The serious part of the day was filled with excitement as members of the Vintage Sports Car Club of WA took on the task of putting their spectacular vehicles through their paces in the ninth annual Flying Fifty.
There were events for all types of cars, 60s/70s sports cars, classic touring cars, space-frame racing cars, MGs, open wheelers and many other categories. For many of the un-initiated including myself, we just enjoyed seeing these terrific cars hurtling around the town circuit. It’s a credit to the drivers and officials that the events proceeded without serious incidents, much to the enjoyment of the drivers and spectators alike.
Our congratulations go to Brian Griffin for winning the MG Tomlinson Trophy event (for a moment however I thought that he and two others were having a friendly, “I’ll win this lap, you the next and so on”) and Richard Gusterson for his “afternoon drive in the country”. Mind you, if I had just had my car engine re-built I’d be doing the same. Well-done Richard for “having a go”.
For those of us who wanted to keep our adrenalin under control and yet enjoy the day and show off our prized MG's, there was the Grand Parade, which covered 3 laps of the circuit.
It was good to see a few new members line up with our club MGs. I saw a red MGB and a black MGB that were new to the club. Welcome guys, here’s hoping we see a lot more of you and your cars at future MG outings. A very big thank you to Michael Gusterson for organising the day and to all our MG Club members for supporting the event by just being there.

Midvale Superkhana - July
|
The Superkhana held on the 1st July at Midvale saw four brave club members turn up at the Speedome. Unfortunately, the appalling weather forced the organisers to cancel the event after only two timed runs. Rami Brass, Ron Fabry, Michael Siddaway and David Pitcher managed to get through their runs at a reasonable pace and completed the day unscathed, a commendable achievement on a day where a Subaru AWD came off and hit a tree!

Collie Crown Historic Race and Regularity Report by Richard Gusterson
|
It was another very enjoyable visit to the Collie Multiplex during the September long weekend.
Having previously competed and been a spectator at the track over the past few years, I was very impressed with the facilities; amount of work already done and in particular the quality of the surface of the track. Still more work to be done in other areas, but the complex appeals as having a great deal of potential and enjoyment for the future.
In total there were 76 car entrants, 26 solos and 5 sidecar units. It was great to have a joint event with motorcycles and the sidecars were particularly impressive – definitely adventurous those guys!
The number of entrants for this year was lower than the organisers hoped for but I understand moving the event away from the long weekend and other changes are under consideration. Myself, Tom Van Den Hoek and Erik Sorensen, represented MGCC. Tom achieved two 1st and one 2nd place in Regularity, with myself having one win, while Erik had a number of spirited drives! We all had a great time with miles of smiles evident.
A great weekend was topped off with a scenic drive though the picturesque Ferguson Valley and a visit to the Wellington Dam, which was overflowing. This part of the country is beautiful and a well-kept secret it seems.
Thanks to all the organising groups, in particular VSCC, where our own Brian Griffin and John Bell were prominent amongst those organisers making things happen. Highly recommend you make this event next year, if you possibly can.

Midvale Superkhana - October Report by Ron Fabry
|
There were four MG's running in the morning session and Rami “did it again” with a fastest lap time of 56.54, Ross Humphries 58.12, Ron Fabry 58.64 & Ivan Michelsen in his MGC GT 62.06.
Those MK1`s with their weight advantage are certainly hard to beat. I was
really trying and got pinged twice for jumping the start! However, I would like to see some of the “Old Boys” who frequent the fridge at the MG meetings and tell me about all the events they used to enter in years past have a go now to try and knock Rami off his Perch! |

Vintage Stampede

"The Vintage
Stampede saw a herd of MG’s, eleven in total, turn up at Barbagello
Racetrack to compete in one of the States premier Regularity events.
Rami Brass
managed a 1st place on his last event and Richard Gusterson and Tom Van
Den Hoek (two very experienced regularity competitors) picked up a couple
of 2nd place positions in earlier events.
It was Shawn
Moore's first time at the track, but he soon had it worked out,
unfortunately he was improving on his nominated time by some 6 seconds,
good fun, but not good for regularity points. Ron Fabry had the spin-out of the day when he tried passing two cars on a very tight corner, fortunately driver and car were unscathed and he was back on track in the next event.
Regardless of the results all MG owners had a big smile on their face and went home contented after a day of spirited driving in their favourite toy.'

Midvale Superkhana - December

Footnote: The good thing about Superkhana events is that you really don’t need a modified car to have fun. All that is required is a helmet and a either a CAMS Non speed license (which many members already have from participating in the Safety Fast Run) or AEM special license which can be purchased for single events. For more info and an entry form see the AEM website: www.classicrally.com.au It would be really good to have more MG’s competing.

Sunday 2nd December saw the running of the
last Superkhana at Midvale for the year—It was a beautiful day and the
weather was just perfect for motorsport.
